10 REASONS TO TRAVEL BY TRAIN

Travelling by train is a unique experience. Be it for the thrill of high speed, the comfort, the scenery and all for an attractive price, there are many more than 10 reasons for choosing to travel by train in Europe! Here are the 10 most commonly quoted reasons from our clients (backpackers, families, couples, seniors, businessman and more).

1. NO HASSLE
Avoid the endless queues at crowded airports, or the stress of driving in a different country, with different rules and lots of traffic jams… By train, you travel from city centre to city centre, smoothly and efficiently. On top of this, all major European stations and trains provide information in English as well as the local language… Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

2. GO WHERE YOU WANT
Europe by rail means freedom. Choose the pass perfectly suited to your needs from our range of passes, starting with single country passes to regional passes and even the Eurail Global Pass covering 21 countries. Tickets are also available for a large choice of routes.

3. SAVE MONEY
Whether you go for a ticket or a pass, you can always benefit from attractive prices. Tickets can be very cheap when booked in advance and passes not only offer various discounts (for children, youth, senior, parties of two adult or more) but also give access to a “bonus” range (free or discounted local transportation, attractions and services).

4. GO WHEN YOU WANT
With multiple train services every day on most routes, you have plenty of opportunities to make the most of your trip. Stay longer in Venice and take a later train to Rome, or arrange a day trip to Le Mont Saint Michel from Paris… No need to adopt your itinerary to the trains, they will adapt to you!

5. EASY DAY TRIPS
Board the train early in the morning, visit the city before a typical lunch, do some shopping and come back late afternoon. For example from Brussels you can go to London, Paris, Cologne or Amsterdam just for a day! And there’s no luggage to carry or hotels to book…

6. TRAVEL IN STYLE
For long or short journeys, comfort is always enjoyable. Treat yourself and upgrade to 1stClass, you’ll have more legroom to stretch your legs, larger seats and more service to make your trip memorable. Check the prices, you’ll be surprise to see that the difference between 1st and 2nd Class is often not that big…

7. TRAVEL OVERNIGHT
Optimize your time and budget… With night trains, you save on hotel costs and wake up the next morning at your destination, fresh and ready to explore. You can sleep in comfort and confidence.

8. GET OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
With 240,000 kilometers of track, rail reaches into virtually every corner of Europe through forests, fields and mountains that just aren’t accessible by road.

9. MEET THE LOCALS
In Europe, the train is very popular! Everyone goes by train so you get an opportunity to meet the locals, learn more about their country and get tips on the best secret destinations.

10. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Planning some holiday travel? Think about making that trip a little greener by travelling by train. Well-established high speed rail systems in use today are more environmentally friendly than air or road travel. By travelling by train, you’re making a responsible and environmentally-friendly choice!

The onboard experience

Europe and the USA offer a wide variety of trains. From high speed day trains running at 320 km/h to scenic trains offering incredible vistas, to overnight trains that offer a hotel experience on wheels, every train offers something special to discover and experience, and the certainty of a high level security and comfort.

DAY TRAINS
Most European day trains offer 1st and 2nd Class accommodation. 1st Class is spacious with large seats, generous legroom and extra space for luggage. 2nd Class is more affordable, but provides great comfort too. Most trains offer a bistro car or trolley service with snacking and beverages. On some routes,a meal at your seat, a reserved taxi upon arrival or free wireless internet is included in the price of a 1st Class ticket.

High speed trains
Travelling at up to 320km per hour, High Speed trains are the fastest way to travel between European main cities. Thanks to them, Europe is virtually shrinking! The most famous High Speed trains are TGV, Eurostar, Thalys, AVE and ICE.

Regional trains
Regional trains connect main cities to the beautiful and peaceful countryside. Choose from the large choice of destinations and schedules.

Scenic trains
Scenic trains run through spectacular areas, where nature is at its best. Enjoy your ride to the full by admiring the views! The most famous scenic trains are the Swiss ones, like Golden Pass Line or Bernina Express.

NIGHT TRAINS
On long route (more than 6 hours), night trains are a smart travel option. Fall asleep in Paris and wake up, fresh and rested in Barcelona…You optimize your time and save on hotel nights! Night trains are available on numerous routes across Europe and offer different levels of comfort. On board personnel’s presence ensures safe and stress-free journeys.

Sleepers
Sleepers are private compartments for 1 to 2 persons in 1st Class and for 2 or 3 persons in 2nd Class. All sleepers offer regular beds with linen sheets, blankets and pillows, private washstands with hot and cold water and a plug for razors.

Couchettes
Couchettes are compartments with 4 to 6 berths (4 in 1st Class, 6 in 2nd Class). There is less privacy than in Sleepers but this is often an opportunity to socialize! Couchettes are also less expensive, hence offer good value for money. Blankets, sheets and pillows are supplied, and some compartments are exclusively reserved for women (gender must be indicated at time of booking).

Sleeperettes
Sleeperettes are reclining seats available in some overnight trains. Perfect for those who want to travel on a budget, they provide comfort at a very affordable price.
